Breakfast isn’t just the most important meal of the day; it’s also the best meal of the day. Those who skip this crucial meal not only find themselves reaching for unhealthy snacks mid-morning but are also missing out on a whole range of tasty options. With so many alternatives from around the globe, you can be as inventive as you wish in the preparation of this essential repast.

Keep it simple

From syrup-soaked pancakes in the US to famous fry ups in the UK, the idea of an unhealthy breakfast is steadily becoming less popular. Society as a whole is becoming more health conscious and most people like to start their day with a selection of fresh fruit and crunchy cereals instead. Breakfast ideas are incredibly varied: some people like to have a simply healthy breakfast with muesli, granola or porridge accompanied by yoghurt and fruit; others may prefer a boiled egg with toast and a cereal bar to follow or as a mid-morning snack. Nuts and grains in any diet are considered healthy and oats release their energy throughout the day and help reduce cholesterol.

In a hurry?

If you are in a hurry, then a filling milk smoothie is an excellent idea. For a start these drinks taste delicious and really fire up the taste buds, but they’re also very easy to make. Simply combine your favorite breakfast cereal (muesli works really well in this recipe), add some milk (or almond milk if you are avoiding dairy), fruit and honey for sweetness and then whizz the whole lot up together. Not only is this a convenient option if you’re short of time, but you’ll also have given yourself a vitamin and protein rich start for your busy schedule.

It’s okay to go instant for oatmeal, there are whole grained oatmeal that are partially cooked where you can just nuke it in some water for 30 seconds to 1 minute and just stir in some dried blueberries, cranberries and/or chopped walnuts for a quick breakfast that provides soluble fiber and gives you the right kind of energy to help keep you going until lunch.

Other Quick Tips

Just grab a banana, a few strawberries, and some Greek yogurt for another really quick breakfast you can slam down without feeling the calorie guilt.  If you are smart and plan ahead and boil about 6 eggs, and have 2 per morning with some yogurt and fruit (pre-peel and put in zip log bags with a paper towel to absorb moisture).  You get 3 days of quick morning breakfasts just by boiling some eggs on Sunday night.

Alternative breakfasts

The British in India used to start their day with Kedgeree and fish remains a popular breakfast ingredient across the globe. Kedgeree incorporates rice, onions, hard-boiled eggs and a smoked fish. Haddock is popular but mackerel or any other fish can be used, although the taste of salmon is a little too delicate for this meal. If you like salmon try preparing smoked salmon on top of blinis and then adding some natural yoghurt with a slice of lemon and some dill on the top. Smoked salmon is also delicious with scrambled eggs.
